This is a question that cannot be answered sufficiently without an external and superior source of morality beyond the human being.
Mere intellectual reasoning would lead us to a very practical and logical but horrific judgment, which you can easily imagine.
From a purely pragmatic perspective, of what real value is an invalid? Or a homeless drug addict? Or an elderly person with dementia? Or an unwanted, unborn baby?
A well-trained border collie is more valuable than a defective human, according to pragmatism and logic alone.
Without the judgments of a superior moral authority to appeal to, we have only our opinions, personal beliefs and feelings, best arguments, and majority vote to decide this question---a frightening prospect indeed.
