The influence of various food and agricultural industries on the research and ideas that shape nutritional science and medical practice is a real threat to public health.
As much as most of us would probably like to believe and trust that governmental, scientific and medical bodies are dedicated to following the results of sound and unbiased science with the purely altruistic motive of improving and protecting the health of the public, this is simply not the case. The nutrition profession and medical and scientific establishments are--for various reasons--wedded to inaccurate and outdated notions about health and nutrition, and continue to promote them, despite any and all evidence that they've gotten things terribly wrong (including the ballooning weight of the nation).
(There was a time when doctors and scientific experts were as wedded to the theories of humorism and miasmas being responsible for health conditions and diseases as modern doctors and scientific experts are to the basic concepts behind the nutritionally absurd and disastrous Food Pyramid.)
When science ceases to follow the evidence, and to inquire, and test its theories with integrity and objectivity---and to evolve with knowledge---for the sake of maintaining its funding and/or reputation, it is no longer reliable; nor is it science, but dogma.
